Key Facts about Bats in the UK |
|
There are 16 species of bats in England. They and their roosts are protected under UK and European legislation. English Nature should always be consulted by planning authorities if proposed development affects bats or roosts. Local planning authorities are required to take account of the presence of bats as a material consideration when determining planning applications. It is advisable for developers to investigate the presence of bats at as early a stage as possible in the development process, preferably at the pre-acquisition or the site selection stage. If bats are present, plans may been to be redrawn to show how bats can be accommodated within the proposal, and work may have to be programmed around the bats' lifecycle to minimise disturbance. If the development would affect bats or roosts, a licence may be required, issued by Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and suitable mitigation put in place. Developers
should engage the service of an experienced bat consultant with a track
record of dealing with bat licensing issues. |
